Become a Copywriter in Nigeria

Have you heard about copywriting and are wondering what it is and how you can make money from the skill as a beginner in Nigeria? Read this article to the end. In this article, I will be explaining in detail everything about copywriting in Nigeria.

We will be covering what is copywriting, copywriting skills every copywriter must possess, salaries of copywriters in Nigeria, the qualifications you need to become a copywriter in Nigeria, the cost of learning to copywrite in Nigeria, and more. So if you are looking for a unique way to make money online you need to read this to the end.

Who is a Copywriter?

A copywriter is someone who has the occupation or act of writing text for the aim of advertising and marketing. Copywriters write for promotional purposes and to increase brand awareness for the brands they write for. The aim of copywriting is to convince a person or group of people to take a particular action on a product or service.

Qualifications to be a Copywriter

There are no university qualifications needed to become a copywriter in Nigeria. All that is needed is to have a little background on the English language and how to persuade people through writing (the power of persuasion). As a professional copywriter in Nigeria, you need to be able to read, write and speak in English.

You should know how to apply punctuation marks as this will be able to bring drama and emotions to your copywriting.

Copywriters’ Salary in Nigeria

The salaries of copywriters in Nigeria depend on what they earn per job. How much copywriters are paid depends on their levels in their copywriting careers too. There are majorly two types of copywriters in Nigeria. We have beginner copywriters and professional copywriters in Nigeria. Averagely, Nigerian copywriters are paid from #20,000 to #100,000 per job.

How to Become a Copywriter in Nigeria

Here are steps on how to become a copywriter in Nigeria.

1. Develop your Copywriting Skills

As I explained earlier, you do not have to necessarily have a degree in English before you can become a successful copywriter in Nigeria. You just need to know the rudiments. You need to learn how to write. You can watch many YouTube videos.

And read many blog articles on this as there is nowhere you can learn copywriting (Copywriting School) in Nigeria for now. You can read books on copywriting too. There are many copywriters that have passed their experience in copywriting into writing.

You can learn from these people by reading their books. Sometimes, the best way to learn is to look at some other copywriter’s work and use the practical approach which is to simply write. You can apply this too.

2. Practice Persuasion in your Writing

It is one thing to be able to write, it is another thing to be able to persuade customers through writing. These two are different. They are not the same. After learning how to write the next step will be how to apply the power of persuasion into writing.

There are many materials on this online and offline too as regards this. The more you are able to persuade clients in your copywriting jobs the more you will be able to attract more copywriting contracts. And when your contractors are happy with your jobs they will introduce or connect you to more clients that want you to write for them.

As a professional copywriter, you need to know your client’s needs and how you can fulfill these needs. For example, you need to know the product or service they want customers to buy and how they want you to do it.

Do they want you to use other customer’s testimonials to convince new buyers to take action or do they want you to just write how important the product or service is? All these you need to know.

3. Start Practicing Copywriting

It is important you practice regularly when it comes to copywriting. In fact, whether you have copywriting jobs or not you need to continue to practice. You can either practice with a pen and a book or practice with a laptop. The moment you stop practicing your copywriting skills will reduce.

So you need continuous work. Most copywriters I know tell me they continue to develop themselves by joining local and international online groups. The most common online groups where many copywriters gather are Facebook groups. There are many copywriting groups on Facebook.

You can join many of these groups to continue to develop yourself and grow.

4. Offer Some Copywriting Jobs

It is important for copywriters that are beginners to do some free jobs to get more exposure easily. However, this is where many copywriters have a problem. They do not want to do some free jobs yet they want to become one of the highest-paid copywriters in Nigeria.

This is not possible and if it is it will take a longer time. You can never compare a beginner copywriter who does more free jobs to another beginner copywriter that is just looking for clients. Copywriting samples will attract more clients than not having copywriting samples. Your copywriting examples will stand in for you even if you are not always there.

Making Money from Copywriting in Nigeria

There are many ways you can make money as a copywriter in the copywriting business in Nigeria. I will be listing these different methods in the list below.

1. Facebook Groups

As I explained earlier, there are many local and international copywriting groups on Facebook. You can follow or like the pages or groups for the latest insights on copywriting jobs. You can also get copywriting jobs on these Facebook groups.

2. Working on Fiverr

Fiverr is now widely used in Nigeria, especially by many freelance copywriters. You can register as a copywriter on Fiverr and make money getting local and international jobs. The Fiverr platform is not free. They take a token from how much you have made in dollars.

3. Work for Newspapers

As a copywriter in Nigeria, you can make money writing for newspapers. You will help the newspaper’s clients to write and promote their products or services.

4. Offer Copywriting Courses

If you are a professional copywriter in Nigeria and you know how to pass knowledge to people you can make money creating copywriting courses and selling them to intending copywriters.

5. Freelance Copywriting

You can also make money by becoming a freelance copywriter in Nigeria writing for different clients and companies. This is the most common way many copywriters make money in Nigeria.

Conclusion

Making money as a copywriter in Nigeria can be very lucrative especially now that many Nigerians are yet to know about the copywriting business. You can learn how to become a copywriter now and start making money in either of the ways I mentioned above.

Copywriting business does not demand huge capital so it is one of the best online businesses in Nigeria so far.
