Become a Politician in Nigeria

One of the best ways to become popular or rich in Nigeria is to become a politician. In this article, we will be giving you a step-by-step guide on how to become a politician in Nigeria especially if you are looking at big seats like becoming a local government chairman, governor, or even the president of Nigeria.

If you think this is impossible? At the end of the article, you will know whether it is possible or not. Many people think there are some qualifications you need to have before you can become a politician in Nigeria. Some even think that you have to study a course related to politics in the university before you can become a politician but this is not true.

You do not need a university degree or any form of higher qualification to become a politician or member of a political party in Nigeria. You just need to do one thing which is to be faithful and hardworking to your political party.

Who is a Politician?

A politician is a person or individual that is active in party politics. This could also be a person holding or seeking an elected office in the government. Every politician proposes, supports, rejects, and creates laws that govern the land and its people. A politician can be anyone who seeks to achieve political power in the government.

What Age Can You be Voted for in Nigeria?

The age you can be voted for depends on the political post you want to be voted in for. However, the minimum age in Nigeria to be voted for is the age of 25. At the age of 25, you can be voted as a member of the state House of Assembly.

At age 30 you can be voted as the governor of a state and at age 35 you can be voted as the president or vice president of Nigeria. All this is not possible with the not-too-young-to-run bill. You need to also have a voter’s card to participate fully in politics in Nigeria.

How to Become a Politician in Nigeria

Here are the steps to becoming a politician in Nigeria today.

1. Join a Political Party

The first step to becoming a politician in Nigeria is to join a political party. We have many political parties in Nigeria. They range from the dominant ones to the non-dominant. You can choose any of these parties to become an active member. It is easy to become a party member by filling out their membership forms.

After filling the forms with your relevant information and it is accessed you will be accepted into the party. To become a politician in Nigeria you have to join any political party. To join the political party you have to be at least 18 years of age. Any age above this age is the best age to enter politics as long as you are agile and still intelligent.

2. Attend Your Party Meetings

What truly qualifies you as a politician in Nigeria is when you attend party meetings. Joining a political party is important but attending party meetings regularly is more important. The more meetings you attend, the more you will be recognized for your contributions and suggestions.

Depending on the political party and the ward you belong to your meetings can be twice a week or once a week. It is very important to meet up with the attendees, especially on weekends. In Nigeria, it is possible to join politics or become a politician without having money.

However, there will be times you will need to do some contributions with your party members to achieve an aim. Participating in these contributions will go a long way in making you a party leader.

3. Accept Responsibilities and Tasks

As time goes by on your journey to get a political post in Nigeria you can also accept responsibilities from your ward or seek to be voted in those seats. Even if you do not win you will be recognized for trying. Responsibility like becoming a secretary in your ward can be demanding.

However, the recognition is a starting ground to become a local government chairman, governor, or president in Nigeria.

4. Seek a Political Mentor

Political mentors are very important if you want to become a successful politician in Nigeria. They help you financially and otherwise to attain any seats in government. All you need is to look for the perfect mentor that suits you and is willing to support you in every way.

You do not necessarily need to get acquainted with the very popular politicians. You just locate mentors that are closer to you – probably the ones in your area. Help them genuinely especially during elections and advise them when they need advice.

5. Be Active in Community Developments

Asides from you being active in your ward and party in general you need to be active in community development too. You need to be able to listen to people, support and render help especially if it is something you can do easily.

Help with minor community projects like repairing manholes, bad roads, pipe-borne water, and more. When you help the people and ease their suffering in the little ways you can they will support you when you want to be voted for to win a seat or position.

6. Connect on Social Media

Unlike the old days when you need to connect people and followers only through newspapers, television, and radio. Today, you can build followership on social media with consistency – tackling challenges that surround Nigeria generally. Twitter is the best social media in Nigeria to build followers easily as a politician.

However, creating a Facebook page can also go a long way. If you cannot manage your social media accounts yourself you can hire a social media manager to help you out.

All you need is to send pictures and status of current happenings in your community and your social media manager will take it up from there. He or she will also respond to comments and questions on your behalf.

7. Join your Party Campaigns

The election period is when your party needs you the most. They want you to be able to gain votes for them freely. This shows solidarity. You need to be present during times like this and be active. If you are able to increase votes from your ward than any other ward in your local government you will be an asset to your political party.

Conclusion

To cap it all your journey to become the president or governor of Nigeria will not be quick. This is because people need to know you first and trust you before they can vote for you. Enjoy every process and every responsibility passed to you. All these will make you indispensable to your party.
